First, we’ve added the ability to view key employees and officers right on an organization’s page. Second, we’ve updated and extracted a ton of fresh data beyond our normal tax filing updates, adding millions of new employee records and tens of thousands of new audits. While we regularly update our database with new documents, we’ve only occasionally added new features (like a full-text filing search and an employee search) or updated its looks or back-end code. This year, however, we dedicated a team to take our favorite news app and give it some much-needed love, as well as new bells and whistles. Most exciting of all, we now have email alerts to let you know when we publish new documents for an organization you’re interested in.
You tell us which nonprofits you want notifications for, and we’ll do the rest. While the majority of tax-exempt organizations that file tax forms do so electronically, some still file on paper. (Small nonprofits do not need to file a 990.) You won’t see employee and officer data for organizations that submit paper filings, as we’re only able to extract this information from electronic filings.

Extracted financial data is not available for the forms filed in this tax period, but Form 990 documents are available for download. The new feature contains every electronically filed Form 990, 990-PF and 990-EZ released by the IRS from 2011 to date. Users also will have instant access to financial summaries of filings. Before, we had been relying on the IRS to release the information in its published annual extracts. Now, however, we extract that information ourselves, meaning that the summaries will appear as soon as we have the documents. This also allows us to correct summaries in instances when a nonprofit later files an amendment.
With help from Malamud, ProPublica plans to keep Nonprofit Explorer, as well as the Internet Archive, up-to-date with Form 990 document images, until public e-file data supersedes them. The process is involved, and we hope to have a reliable workflow for this process within the next few months. While we update 990 filings monthly, we also provide other data about nonprofits. The employee records we’re surfacing are now updated for all filings processed through early May 2021, which adds nearly 8 million new records. We’ve also added more than 33,000 audits of nonprofit organizations from the Federal Audit Clearinghouse.

When you’re reading a document, we’ve also added helpful navigation and a print button that also allows you to download a PDF of the filing. The 990 is a public document that you can search for on the websites for the Secretary of State or the Attorney General where the organization is incorporated. In addition, 990s are available from a variety of open source and subscription sources. You may also request them from an organization or from the IRS. This page offers resources for understanding and completing the Form 990 as well as information on how to locate a tax exempt organization’s 990. This database is available by subscription or for free at our Candid partner locations.
Late last month, Carl Malamud, founder of Public Resource, sent the entire existing trove of documents to ProPublica and to the Internet Archive in order to re-establish free, public access to the data. The document set — over 8 million filings, weighing in at over 8.4 terabytes — comprises all Form 990s digitized by the IRS between 2002 and November 2014. Though the agency posted some new filings to its own website in early 2022, it also uploaded a batch of nonpublic forms by accident. After discovering the error in August 2022, it removed nearly two years’ worth of documents from its website and notified Congress of the mistake.
